Venezuela is known as an oil-producing country and the home of “El Sistema,” the world-famous system of youth musical orchestras that has revolutionized the concept of youth music education. But the “Land of Grace” —as Venezuela was known by the early colonizers— is also a place with a deep, rich cultural legacy, the result of a blend of indigenous, African and Spanish traditions. Over the years, the music of this mixture absorbed, and was absorbed by, other traditions such as European classical music and jazz.
As part of the Jazz Across the Américas series, ALJA presents the Music of Venezuela, featuring several premier instrumentalists and composers joining the 18-piece Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra directed by Arturo O’Farrill. The orchestra will perform the world premiere of “Venezuela Unida” by pianist and composer Edward Simon, a new work commissioned by the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance specially for this concert. Special guests also include jazz pianist Luis Perdomo, percussionist and cuatro player Jackeline Rago, percussionist Roberto Quintero and bassist José “Bam Bam” Rodríguez.
Join us for an exploration of jazz through the work of these great musicians from Venezuela, the Land of Grace.
