efore the touring Simón Bolívar Big Band
Jazz performs at the Lincoln Center in New York, the band will appear in
Ridgewood at the West Side Concert Series on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 7:30
p.m. in the acoustically spectacular sanctuary of West Side Presbyterian
Church.
The
band is comprised of 40 young musicians from de Simón Bolívar Music
Conservatory, an institution responsible for the academic and professional
training of the members of the National System of Youth and Children’s
Orchestras of Venezuela, known worldwide as “El Sistema.” Andres Briceno, one
of the most important contemporary musicians in Venezuela, is Music Director.
“El
Sistema is providing music education to children, lifting countless tens of
thousands out of poverty through the disciplines and skills learned,” said
Scott Brubaker, a member of the Metropolitan Opera horn section and chair of
the West Side Concert Series program advisory board. “We are especially pleased
to bring this world-renowned band to New Jersey in advance of their appearance
at the Lincoln Center.”
The
free program will feature the talented performers, playing together the most
complex repertoire from traditional jazz to Latin Jazz Fusion where
improvisation has a leading character and creativity fulfills the interpretations.

No
tickets are required for this free concert. However, a free-will offering will
be taken during intermission. A suggested donation of $10 per person is
recommended. The West Side Concert Series depends on the support of its
benefactors and audiences’ financial donations. There is ample free parking and
child care is provided for preschool age children.
